The Special Juvenile Police Unit (SJPU) is set up in every district and city to coordinate and ensures effective police interface with children alleged to be/ in conflict with the law and children in need of care and protection. The SJPU works as a watchdog for protecting children in vulnerable and at-risk situations along with networking and convergence with government and non-government organisations. The SJPU functions in consonance with the provisions prescribed under the Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection of Children) Act, 2015, and the rules framed there under.

Composition: The unit is headed by a Chairperson who is a DSP rank officer, Mahila & Shishu Desk officers designated as the Child Welfare Police Officer, and two social workers including a woman who are engaged in the District Child Protection Unit as members of SJPU.

Partners: The SJPU works closely with various departments, agencies and bodies both government and non-government. Some of our partners include District Child Protection Unit, the Juvenile Justice Board, Child Welfare Committee, Women and Child Development Department, Health Department, Education Department, District Legal Services Authority, NGOs including CHILDLINE.
