A significant number of people go missing each year due to varied reasons ranging from mental illness, misadventure, ill-treatment at home, domestic violence or due to intimate love relationship. The CAW&CW has set up a Missing Persons Monitoring Unit (MPMU) to keep an eye on incidences of people reported missing in the State. Upon receipt of information about missing persons, the descriptive roll of the person with photographs is published in newspapers, television channels, etc. for circulation among the general public, after due consent from parents/guardians in case of a minor. After she/he is traced, the person is reunited with the family.

MPMU keeps liaison with the Central organisations like CBI, NCRB, IB, Interpol, etc. on missing person issues. In cases of sensitive and critical importance, the investigation is taken up by CAW&CW.

Laws for Missing Persons: In case of police complaint regarding any missing children, the same is reduced into a First Information Report (FIR). There is an initial presumption of either abduction or trafficking, unless, proved otherwise. To prevent children and women from exploitation, regular advisories are issued on missing children and trafficking of human beings from time to time emphasizing followup  actions to be taken by police.
